MARIO GURFINKEL

About Artist

An architect by trade, Gurfinkel discovered his talent for creating sculptures after he accidentally learned how to weld while building a prototype for a folding stage.
Born in Santiago de Chile in 1970, this self taught artist, was quickly motivated by the new trade he had learned and his first models began to appear spontaneously and almost magically. A small tree, then something more complex, a hand, a horse, the face of an old man, and so on without stopping. Some of these were exhibited in his first group exhibition at the Eva Holz Gallery, November 2018 and then in his second group exhibition of national sculptors at the Eduardo Lira Gallery, April 2019.

CREATIVE PROCESS
The work that I managed to do in this short time is nothing more than the result of amazement and “creative joy”. Where they converge or rather conspire. Iron as the material and the trade of welding as alchemy. It is a continuous flow of shapes that have been maturing in my head and that are shaped and materialized through cuts, bends and welded joints on bars and sheets of iron. In this very first stage, in which I am still only learning I opted for well – known shapes.
